Access-It Library: Requirements

What sort of hardware do I need to run Access-It?
Access-It's efficiency means it will operate successfully on current entry-level Windows, Linux or Macintosh machines meeting the minimum specifications below. Of course, additional processor speed and available RAM will markedly improve processing times.

It is also worth noting that available RAM is more important that total RAM. For example, if you have 512MB of RAM but like to run several large programs at the same time, then there may not be enough left to run Access-It. As a general rule, Access-It should have 256 MB of RAM available to itself, over and above any other program or operating system requirements.

Platforms

Minimum Specifications
For Small Libraries

  • Memory and Disk Space: to run the Access-It Client, Web Server and/or BTS the minimum required memory is 512 MB RAM and disk space of 80-100MB.
  • to host the server: for Windows PCs, Linux (x86) servers - 2.8GHz Pentium IV or higher recommended; for Macintosh - Intel Mac (or G5) recommended
  • to run the Access-It Client application: for Windows PCs, Linux (x86) servers - 2.8GHz Pentium IV or higher recommended; for Macintosh - iMac G4/G5, but Intel Mac recommended

For Large Libraries

  • Memory and Disk Space: to run the Access-It Client, Web Server and/or BTS the minimum required memory is 512 MB RAM, but 2GB strongly recommended; and disk space of 100-300MB or larger.
  • to host the server: for Windows PCs, Linux (x86) servers - 2.8GHz Pentium IV or higher recommended; for Macintosh - Intel Mac xServe recommended
  • to run the Access-It Client application: for Windows PCs, Linux (x86) servers - 2.8GHz Pentium IV or higher recommended; for Macintosh - Intel Mac recommended

Does network speed come into the picture?
Network speed (bandwidth) will make a difference when running Access-It. For example, if your library server is also the main server for your organization and is subject to high volumes of users and traffic, Access-It may have to wait or queue for network space on occasions. To achieve optimum performance levels, it is preferable – but not essential – to run Access-It on a dedicated server. Similarly, while Access-It works effectively over a 10 Mbit network, it will provide noticeable benefits to users when run over a 100 Mbit network.
